Their archaeological and epigraphic record is the primary means of studying and understanding their culture. Consequently, they must be approached as prehistoric people, and their extensive visual and material culture speaks for itself. However, glimpses in the records of Greek and Roman authors reveal that the Etruscans were literate and far from primordial. They even admired their written histories, which were greatly admired by the Romans themselves. Recent archaeological discoveries and new insights have shed light on the birth, growth, and demise of this enigmatic ancient people. A Short History of the Etruscans explores the "discovery" of the Etruscans from the Renaissance onwards, including the mysterious Etruscan language, the Etruscan landscape, the growth of Etruscan cities and Mediterranean trade, religion and ritual, sanctuaries and monumental grave sites, and the fatal incorporation of Etruria into Rome's political orbit.

                            Weight: 374g
Dimension: 139 x 215 x 22 (mm)
ISBN-13: 9781780766157

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0522/4297/2845/products/4d58271b1aa0f52158e387bc798ab392.jpg?v=1620415575
ricerche-archeologiche-a-santandrea-di-loppio-trento-italia-larea-della-chiesa
Ricerche Archeologiche a Sant'Andrea di Loppio (Trento, Italia): L'Area della Chiesa

                                                            Format: Paperback / softback
Length: 316 pages
Publication date: 03 September 2020
Publisher: Archaeopress

This is the second volume presenting results of archaeological investigations on Isola di Sant'Andrea, located in the basin of Lake Loppio (Italy), with finds ranging from prehistory to the First World War. In recent years, a growing body of academic publications has highlighted the importance of Elam and its enduring legacy. To further explore this fascinating civilization, a group of 40 international scholars has come together to produce a comprehensive and lavishly illustrated English language treatment of Elamite civilization. The Elamite World, as the book is titled, covers a wide range of topics, including the physical setting, historical development, languages and people, material culture, art, science, religion, and society. It also delves into the legacy of Elam in the Persian empire and its presence in the modern world. The medieval and later pottery sets a baseline for future research in the area.

                                                            Format: Paperback / softback
Length: 296 pages
Publication date: 18 February 2021
Publisher: Archaeopress

Life, Death, and Rubbish Disposal in Roman Norton, North Yorkshire: Excavations at Brooklyn House 2015-16

Reports on excavations conducted in preparation for the development of a site in Norton-on-Derwent, North Yorkshire, near the line of the primary Roman road that ran from the crossing point of the River Derwent near Malton Roman fort to York (Eboracum). The Brooklyn House site yielded valuable insights into various aspects of the poorly understood "small town of Delgovicia." The area began to be utilized for seemingly widely dispersed burials in the mid-third century AD. Among these was a distinctive bustum-type burial of a soldier, or former soldier, which yielded a remarkably well-preserved assemblage of military equipment. Additionally, evidence of a possible mausoleum was discovered.

During the late third and fourth centuries, the burial activity was succeeded by occupation in the form of substantial stone-founded or, in some cases, possibly stone-built buildings fronting onto the Roman road, which served as the primary approach road to the town from the south. These structures could have had some connection to the Norton Roman pottery industry, the core area of which was located to the east of the site. However, no evidence from these structures indicated such a relationship. Following a relatively brief occupation, a significant portion of the site was utilized for the disposal of large quantities of rubbish and structural debris, likely originating from locations closer to or beyond the river crossing, including possibly the Roman fort.

The Roman pottery assemblage incorporated in excess of 21,000 sherds and significantly contributes to our understanding of pottery use and production in Roman Malton/Norton. After considering the social changes that marked the end of the Later Bronze Age, it examines the environmental, economic, demographic, and cultural factors that underpinned the emergence of the fragmented and regionalized societies of the Early Iron Age. Subsequent chapters trace the development of increasingly complex and distinctive social forms across Britain and Ireland, including the hillfort societies of southern England and the Welsh Marches; village communities of the Upper Thames Valley; the dense settlement landscapes, cemeteries, and chariot burials of East Yorkshire; the hillfort communities of Northumbria and southeast Scotland; the broch-building societies of Atlantic Scotland; and the ritual landscapes of Iron Age Ireland.

Central themes that cut across the books broadly chronological structure include: the creation and expression of individual and collective identities; the social role of art and religion; changing gender roles; technological innovation, including iron-working and rotary technology; the complex and varied treatments of the dead; gift-giving, trade, and exchange; and the role of conflict and violence.

The text is supported throughout by box features expanding on individual sites, objects, themes, or debates, and the book focuses, where appropriate, on fresh and exciting new finds and discoveries from the last few years, including, for example, the well-preserved bog bodies from eastern Ireland, recently excavated chariot burials from Newbridge and Ferry Fryston, Iron Age roads from East Anglia, the Midlands, and Ireland, musical instruments from High Pasture Cave in Skye and Cnip in Lewis, the shrine containing gold torcs from Stirlingshire, and more.

Dimension: 246 x 189 (mm)
ISBN-13: 9780415537940

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0522/4297/2845/products/c016721914e7170918da0f5679a89cf7_9bd064d5-98ba-4e4e-bbe3-f6a820a3d967.jpg?v=1620692151
atlas-of-classical-history
Atlas of Classical History

The Atlas of Classical History is a comprehensive reference work that provides a visual grasp of the spatial dimension of history, featuring over 130 colour maps of ancient physical and human landscapes from Britain to India and the Sahara. The author describes the results of the study of old archaeological surveys carried out on the island – which had not been published yet – and the results of new archaeological surveys. The conclusions from these studies detected a series of trends that help to better understand the settlement patterns of the island during the transition from the Roman period to medieval times. Furthermore, they help to obtain an overview of different transformations that occurred in the rural world in a territory that was strongly marked by its insularity. Equally discernable in this territory was the role played by the old indigenous substrate, which was reflected in the survival or re-use of pre and proto-historic settlements.

                            Weight: 512g
Dimension: 204 x 288 x 14 (mm)
ISBN-13: 9781789698503

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0522/4297/2845/products/462adee2fddf5d0f4ceecb987ef8e2c2.jpg?v=1620697480
four-de-sevrier-et-autres-fours-et-fourneaux-dargile-aux-ages-des-metaux-en-europe-occidentale
four de Sevrier et autres fours et fourneaux d'argile aux ages des metaux en Europe occidentale

This volume looks at the history of the Sevrier kiln, an artefact discovered in 1974 in Lake Annecy, considered in turn as one of the earliest Western pottery kilns, an enigmatic stove for domestic use, and a technological link in the Final Bronze Age which heralded the professionalisation of pottery, hitherto a purely domestic industry.

                                                            Format: Paperback / softback
Length: 248 pages
Publication date: 25 February 2021
Publisher: Archaeopress

The Sevrier kiln, unearthed in 1974 on a submerged island in Lake Annecy in the Haute-Savoie region of France, stands as a remarkable discovery in alpine archeology. Nearly fifty years after its discovery, it continues to ignite intense debate among scholars. This comprehensive study delves into the historical trajectory of an artifact that has been perceived as one of the earliest Western pottery kilns, an enigmatic stove for domestic use, and a significant technological breakthrough that heralded the professionalization of pottery, previously a purely domestic industry, characterized by seasonal production and self-sufficiency.

This multidisciplinary exploration employs archaeological, ethnoarchaeological, and experimental methodologies to scrutinize the diverse hypotheses surrounding the Sevrier kiln. This transformation occurred a few centuries later, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of human civilization.

The Sevrier kiln's discovery on a submerged island in Lake Annecy, France, in 1974 has sparked ongoing discussions among scholars in the field of alpine archeology. The kiln, which was found on a submerged island in Lake Annecy, is considered one of the earliest Western pottery kilns. It has been the subject of numerous studies and investigations over the years, with researchers attempting to understand its purpose, age, and significance.

The kiln was discovered in 1974 by a team of archaeologists led by Jean-Claude Sevrier. The team was exploring the submerged island of Annecy, which is located in the Haute-Savoie region of France, when they stumbled upon the kiln. The kiln was buried under several meters of sediment and was in a remarkably well-preserved state.

The archaeologists were able to date the kiln to the Final Bronze Age, which occurred between 1500 and 1000 BC. This period was a significant turning point in human history, as it marked the transition from a nomadic lifestyle to settled communities. The Final Bronze Age was characterized by the development of complex societies, the use of new technologies, and the emergence of trade networks.

The Sevrier kiln is significant because it provides evidence of the early development of pottery production in Western Europe. Prior to the discovery of the kiln, pottery was primarily a domestic industry, with individuals producing small amounts of pottery for their own use. However, the kiln suggests that pottery production was becoming more organized and specialized during the Final Bronze Age.

The kiln was constructed using a variety of materials, including clay, stone, and wood. The walls of the kiln were lined with clay, which provided insulation and prevented the kiln from burning out. The roof of the kiln was made of wood, which allowed for the ventilation of the kiln and the regulation of the temperature.

The archaeologists were able to identify several types of pottery that were produced in the kiln. These include bowls, pots, and jars. The pottery was decorated with a variety of techniques, including painting, stamping, and incising. The decorations were often geometric or floral in nature and were used to identify the pottery as belonging to a particular workshop or region.

The purpose of the Sevrier kiln is still a matter of debate among scholars. Some researchers suggest that the kiln was used for the production of pottery for domestic use. Others argue that the kiln was used for the production of pottery for trade or commerce. Some researchers even suggest that the kiln was used for the production of pottery for ritual or religious purposes.

Despite the ongoing debate, the Sevrier kiln remains a significant discovery in the field of alpine archeology. It provides valuable evidence of the early development of pottery production in Western Europe and sheds light on the complex social and economic structures of Bronze Age communities. The kiln continues to inspire researchers and scholars, and its discovery has helped to shape our understanding of the history and culture of the Bronze Age.

In conclusion, the Sevrier kiln is a remarkable discovery that has contributed significantly to our understanding of the history and culture of the Bronze Age. Its discovery in 1974 on a submerged island in Lake Annecy, France, has sparked ongoing debates among scholars and has helped to shape our understanding of the early development of pottery production in Western Europe. The kiln provides valuable evidence of the complex social and economic structures of Bronze Age communities and sheds light on the transition from a nomadic lifestyle to settled communities. They serve as symbolic markers that signify the crossing of boundaries between two worlds. This is particularly true in the case of the chapel door, which stands as a threshold between the realm of the living and the realm where the living and the dead coexist. Within the chapel, a false door serves as a barrier between the world of the living and that of the dead.

When examining doors from a holistic perspective, Doors, Entrances, and Beyond... proposes that porticos, false doors, niches, and mastaba chapel entrances are interconnected in their role as a barrier between two worlds. Among these, the entrance into the chapel holds the utmost importance. The various elements of the entrance serve multiple functions, including signaling, identifying, inviting, and, in some instances, warning. However, once one steps inside the entrance, the corridor walls' decoration assumes a guiding and explanatory role. The primary themes depicted in this decoration revolve around the tomb owner, either standing or seated with or without family members, and supporting figures.

Over time, there has been a correlation between decreasing tomb dimensions and the shrinking size of the chosen decoration themes. At the same time, a change in decoration themes occurred on both the corridor walls and the false door, which can be attributed to fluctuations in the supply of the k3, or funerary goods, for the deceased.

In conclusion, doors, as physical and symbolic gateways, transcend their mere utility. They embody the crossing of boundaries, the interplay between life and death, and the transformation of spaces. The chapel door, in particular, stands as a testament to the complex interplay between the mortal and divine, offering a glimpse into the realms beyond our own.

                            Weight: 746g
Dimension: 206 x 289 x 14 (mm)
ISBN-13: 9781789698718

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0522/4297/2845/products/70f87c4330a7be2d30e864fb73ab8838.jpg?v=1620697493
discurso-espacio-y-poder-en-las-religions-antiguas
Discurso, espacio y poder en las religions antiguas

Discurso, espacio y poder en las religiones antiguas explores how power wielders shape discourses to justify their hierarchies, using diverse forms such as ritual violence, martyrdom, sacrifice, or divine trickery. Intellectuals, aristocrats, holy men or even the dead all needed to shape a discourse that would allow them to justify their hierarchies, whether they were internal or common to all of society, to reach a social consensus and to sustain them over time. The forms in which power used religion to express itself were quite diverse, such as ritual violence, martyrdom, sacrifice, or even divine trickery. Sometimes certain spaces became places whose political and religious control brought about conflicts, whose resolution was found through the legitimisation generated by the complex theological discourse, which reinforced the extraordinary qualities of the gods to reaffirm their authority, or through the cohesive value of the rites. This comprehensive volume presents the outcomes of extensive documentary research and excavations conducted at two significant sugar plantation sites on the island of Nevis. Upper Rawlins, situated atop the majestic Nevis mountain, was inhabited during the late 17th and early 18th centuries before being abandoned in the early years. Fenton Hill, on the other hand, experienced occupancy from the mid-17th to the mid-19th century, initially with an earthfast timber structure, likely serving as a dwelling house, which was later transformed into a kitchen and encased in stone around 1700. The adjacent main house, which may have been destroyed during the French raid of 1706, was subsequently rebuilt in timber. The final phase of occupation was overseen by Portuguese Madeiran laborers, who were introduced in the 1840s to address a labor shortage.

Detailed reports on the findings assemblage encompass comprehensive discussions of a diverse range of artifacts. These include handmade, bonfired Afro-Caribbean pottery crafted by enslaved African women, imported European ceramics and glass, clay tobacco pipes, metalwork, and building materials. The prevalence of imported goods originating from south-western England serves as a clear indication of the strong commercial connections between Nevis and Bristol, highlighting the intricate trade networks that existed in this region. Upon entering the cave, he was immediately captivated by its exceptional nature. Located in north central Montana, Lookout Cave had been discovered in 1920, but it wasn't until 1969 that a field crew from the University of Montana embarked on an excavation to explore a significant portion of this remote site. The excavation yielded a remarkable collection of over one thousand items made of normally perishable wood, feathers, and sinew. The absence of moisture and direct sunlight within the cave created ideal conditions for the preservation of these artifacts. This fully illustrated volume showcases these remarkable items and provides valuable insights into Plains culture and the centuries-old utilization of this well-concealed space.

Dimension: 229 x 152 (mm)
ISBN-13: 9781771991797

John H. These artefacts provide key evidence for important evolutionary developments in hominin behaviour and cognition. Avoiding conventional approaches based on progressive stages of development, this book instead examines global trends in six separate dimensions of technological behaviour between 2.6 million and 10,000 years ago. Combining these independent trends results in both a broader and a more finely punctuated perspective on key intervals of change in hominin behaviour. To draw this picture together, the concluding section explores behavioural, cognitive, and demographic implications of developments in material culture and technological procedures at seven key intervals during the Pleistocene.

Researchers interested in Paleolithic archaeology will find this book invaluable. These groups, who were dismissed from the Roman army after defeating the Marcomanni by the Danube, brought with them a familiarity with Roman institutions and practices. Equipped with advanced warfare skills and battle-seasoned, they swiftly seized land and established lordly centers. To acquire wealth and reward their retainers and partners, the lords initiated the production of commodities for trade with their peers and Continental associates, including the Romans.

In these transcultural circumstances, lords and their retainers fostered the artisanal production of exquisite quality, nurturing a heroic ethos and refining hall etiquette. It studies Bronze Age tells and our approaches towards an understanding of this fascinating way of life, drawing on the material remains of long-term architectural stability and references back to ancestral places. While the first volume challenged Neo-Diffusionist models of the influence of Mediterranean palatial centres on the development of tell communities in the Carpathians and an attendant focus on social stratification, the second part sets out an alternative theoretical approach, which foregrounds architecture and the social use of space. Unlike the reductionist macro perspective of mainstream social modelling, inspired by aspects of practice theory outlined in this book, the account given seeks to allow for what is truly remarkable about these sites, and what we can infer from them about the way of life they once framed and enabled. The stability seen on tells, and their apparent lack of change on a macro scale, are specific features of the social field, in a given region and for a specific period of time. Both stability and change are contingent upon specific historical contexts, including traditional practices, their material setting, and human intentionality. They are not an inherent, given property of this or that ‘type of society or social structure. For our tells, it is argued here, underneath the specific manifestation of sociality maintained, we clearly do see social practices and corresponding material arrangements being negotiated and adjusted. Echoing the argument laid out in the first part of this study, it is suggested that archaeology should take an interest in such processes.

Practice – The Social, Space, and Materiality forms the second part of Bronze Age Tell Communities in Context: An exploration into culture, society, and the study of European prehistory. Divided into two interconnected sections, the first section focuses on the remarkable findings from the Centro Ricerche sul Deserto Orientale (CeRDO), an Italian research center based in Varese. Under the direction of Alfredo and Angelo Castiglioni, CeRDO embarked on a pioneering program of expeditions between 1989 and 2006. These expeditions traversed the renowned Korosko Road, the primary desert route connecting Egypt and Sudan, and explored numerous other tracks throughout the Eastern Desert. Their journey unveiled a rich archaeological landscape, revealing hundreds of previously undocumented sites, some of which had been frequented for millennia. Prominent among these sites were gold-production areas and their associated settlements, which contained invaluable artifacts and remnants of ancient civilizations.

The CeRDO record, comprising a photographic database and the material retrieved during these expeditions, holds even greater significance today. Unfortunately, many of these sites have been severely disturbed and even destroyed by recent gold mining activities. The second section of the volume introduces the historical significance of the Korosko Road and provides a detailed account of a single, short season of documentation conducted in 2013. Organized under the auspices and support of the Sudan Archaeological Research Society, the project aimed to meticulously record a group of pharaonic rock inscriptions discovered by CeRDO expeditions. These inscriptions, primarily located along the Korosko Road, are closely linked to the colonial gold-working industry. In addition to recording and studying the rock inscriptions, the project also involved extensive investigation and mapping of the wider context, as well as the recording and analysis of associated archaeological material, particularly ceramic remains.

The results of this project are remarkable and provide valuable insights into the rich cultural heritage of the Eastern Desert. The detailed recording of the rock inscriptions, coupled with the comprehensive investigation and mapping of the surrounding area, enhances our understanding of the historical and economic significance of this region during the colonial era. The study of ceramic remains sheds light on the daily lives and technological advancements of the ancient inhabitants, contributing to a more comprehensive picture of the past.

Overall, this volume serves as a testament to the tireless efforts of archaeologists and researchers who have dedicated their lives to exploring and documenting the hidden treasures of the Eastern Desert. It provides a valuable resource for scholars, students, and enthusiasts alike, shedding light on the rich history and cultural heritage of Sudan.

                            Weight: 1100g
Dimension: 212 x 298 x 20 (mm)
ISBN-13: 9781789698039

Derek A. In Contested Antiquity, Esther Solomon curates explorations of how those who safeguard cultural heritage are confronted with the best ways to represent this heritage responsibly. How should visitors be introduced to an ancient Byzantine fortification that still holds the grim reminders of the cruel prison it was used as until the 1980s? How can foreign archaeological institutes engage with another nation's heritage in a meaningful way? What role do locals have in determining what is sacred, and can this sense of the sacred extend beyond buildings to the surrounding land? Together, the essays featured in Contested Antiquity offer fresh insights into the ways ancient heritage is negotiated for modern times.

                            Weight: 536g
Dimension: 152 x 229 x 25 (mm)
ISBN-13: 9780253055972

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0522/4297/2845/products/4f912c1874c02b66506a4545ba671274.jpg?v=1620992900
roman-britain-and-where-to-find-it
Roman Britain and Where to Find It

                                                            Format: Paperback / softback
Length: 256 pages
Publication date: 15 September 2020
Publisher: Amberley Publishing

An illustrated history of the best Roman sites and artefacts to be found in Britain, for anyone wanting to discover the Roman past.

                            Weight: 594g
Dimension: 233 x 166 x 17 (mm)
ISBN-13: 9781445690148

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0522/4297/2845/products/4e3774c9c247579ee1f436caf0c96b8a.jpg?v=1620996846
new-light-on-the-neolithic-of-northern-england
New Light on the Neolithic of Northern England

                                                            Format: Paperback / softback
Length: 192 pages
Publication date: 15 November 2020
Publisher: Oxbow Books

A review of the latest research into the Neolithic settlement of northern England/southern Scotland.

                            Weight: 902g
Dimension: 216 x 279 x 16 (mm)
ISBN-13: 9781789252668

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0522/4297/2845/products/cd842c54adfb55f8b3574709c6b65a96.jpg?v=1620997251
collision-of-worlds-a-deep-history-of-the-fall-of-aztec-mexico-and-the-forging-of-new-spain
Collision of Worlds: A Deep History of the Fall of Aztec Mexico and the Forging of New Spain

                                                            Format: Hardback
Length: 358 pages
Publication date: 03 September 2020
Publisher: Oxford University Press Inc

Five centuries ago a group of Spaniards joined forces with Mesoamerican allies to topple the mighty Aztec empire. Whether perceived as an era of lost simplicity or a barbaric nightmare, the medieval past has always served as a mirror for modernity. This captivating book delves into the diverse ways in which various political and intellectual projects, ranging from nationalism to the discipline of anthropology, have appropriated the Middle Ages for their own purposes. Author K. Patrick Fazioli employs an interdisciplinary approach, grounding his analysis in contemporary power struggles and identity issues in the Eastern Alps while also exploring the broader implications for scholarly research and public memory.

The concept of the "Middle Ages" has been subject to extensive interpretation and reimagining throughout history. It has been variously portrayed as a period of intellectual stagnation, religious fervor, and social upheaval. While some scholars argue that the Middle Ages were a time of great cultural and scientific achievements, others suggest that it was a period of darkness and backwardness.

One of the most significant ways in which the Middle Ages has been appropriated is through the lens of nationalism. Nationalists have often sought to define their countries and cultures in opposition to the perceived decadence and backwardness of the Middle Ages. They have used the medieval past to construct a narrative of national identity and pride, highlighting the virtues of traditional values and customs.

Another example of the appropriation of the Middle Ages is in the field of anthropology. Anthropologists have used the Middle Ages as a source of inspiration for their studies of culture and society. They have studied the social structures, religious practices, and economic systems of medieval societies to better understand the origins and development of modern societies.

The Middle Ages has also been appropriated in the realm of literature and art. Writers and artists have drawn on the medieval past to create works that explore themes of power, religion, and morality. For example, the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, George R.R. Martin, and William Shakespeare have all been influenced by the medieval world.

However, the appropriation of the Middle Ages has also been met with criticism. Some scholars argue that it is ahistorical and perpetuates stereotypes and misconceptions about the past. They argue that the Middle Ages were not a time of simplicity and barbarism, but rather a complex and diverse period of history with its own unique set of challenges and achievements.

In conclusion, the myth of the "Middle Ages" has played a significant role in the Western historical imagination. It has been appropriated by various political and intellectual projects, ranging from nationalism to anthropology, for their own purposes.
