Benedictine Beda Mayr,OSB (1742-1794) was a key figure in the German Catholic Enlightenment and the first to develop an ecumenical methodology for reuniting churches. He argued that Catholic theology should follow minority opinions for unsettled dogmatic questions and limit ecclesial infallibility to directly revealed truths. This edition presents the entire text of Mayr's book in a reliable translation, allowing readers to see the strengths and weaknesses of Enlightenment ecumenism.

The Benedictine Beda Mayr, OSB (1742-1794) was a prominent figure in the German Catholic Enlightenment, known for his pioneering efforts in addressing the challenges posed by Reimarus and Lessing. He not only grappled with the ideas of these influential thinkers but also developed an ecumenical methodology aimed at reuniting the churches. This text, originally translated from the German for the first time, presents a theologian who deliberately ventured into the margins of orthodoxy to foster greater interconfessional dialogue.

Mayr argued that Catholic theology should embrace minority opinions for unsettled dogmatic questions, thereby facilitating easier union agreements with Protestant churches. Additionally, he proposed limiting ecclesial infallibility to directly revealed truths, thereby diminishing the authoritative claims of conciliar or papal decisions. While the study of Catholic Enlightenment is gaining momentum among historians and theologians, there is a scarcity of reliable translations available. A significant advantage of this edition is its comprehensive introduction, which provides a valuable guide to the vibrant landscape of eighteenth-century theological discussions. Moreover, the entire text of Mayr's book, with the exception of its appendix, is presented, allowing readers to assess the strengths and weaknesses of Enlightenment ecumenism.

Mayr's work, "Limited Infallibility," was included on the Index of Forbidden Books until the 20th century. It invites readers to engage in a modern, non-scholastic approach to theology, with the ultimate goal of promoting Christian unity.
