About Diagnostic and therapeutic algorithms in internal medicine for dogs and cats
The Problem-Oriented Approach (POA) is a recommended methodology by the College of Internal Medicine for effectively addressing medical inquiries and concerns. This approach forms the basis for a groundbreaking book that employs algorithms to tackle prevalent clinical and laboratory anomalies in dogs and cats. The book's innovative perspective offers insights into 85 different chapters, each commencing with a succinct introduction providing essential pathophysiological and classification data.
The book employs algorithms as a guiding framework, systematically leading clinicians through a sequence of steps for diagnostic investigations. This method assists in attaining accurate diagnoses and devising appropriate treatment strategies. Notably, the book introduces two novel features: colour-coded sections and embedded links for supplementary information within the algorithms. The colour scheme includes yellow, signifying the diagnostic pathway; red, denoting the diagnosis itself; and blue, indicating the recommended treatment. This inventive approach facilitates veterinarians' navigation through the complex diagnostic process, ultimately assisting in the selection of the most suitable therapeutic approach.
Crucially, the algorithms incorporate red boxes that list potential differential diagnoses for each specific issue, enabling swift identification of alternative possibilities. By following the yellow-boxed pathways, clinicians gain a comprehensive understanding of the diagnostic journey, thereby optimising the diagnostic protocol. Furthermore, the book is enriched with informative notes that are cross-referenced within the algorithms. These notes provide additional details pertaining to distinct diagnostic investigations, specific diseases, or recommended therapeutic interventions.
In essence, the book leverages the problem-oriented approach, algorithmic frameworks, and innovative features like colour coding and embedded references to offer a valuable resource for veterinarians. By seamlessly guiding practitioners through the diagnostic process and furnishing them with relevant information, this resource empowers them to make well-informed decisions about diagnoses and treatment plans for various clinical abnormalities in dogs and cats.

He graduated with honours in Veterinary Medicine from the State University of Bologna and later pursued an internship at the same institution. His academic journey continued with a successful defense of his PhD thesis in 2005. Subsequently, he secured a permanent position at the Department of Veterinary Medical Sciences at the University of Bologna, Italy, where he currently serves as an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and heads the unit of Internal Medicine.
Fracassi's expertise extends beyond his home institution. He undertook a Residency in Internal Medicine at the Clinic for Small Animal Internal Medicine at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. His dedication and accomplishments in this field earned him the recognition of becoming a European Specialist in Internal Medicine in 2012, holding the title of Diplomate ECVIM-CA-internal medicine.
His responsibilities encompass a wide spectrum of roles, including patient care, educational activities for students, postgraduate training, and mentorship for interns and residents. His research endeavours primarily focus on internal medicine concerning companion animals, particularly emphasising endocrinology.
Fracassi's involvement in the veterinary community is remarkable. He holds the prestigious position of president of the European Society of Veterinary Endocrinology (ESVE) and has previously served as the president of the Italian Society of Veterinary Internal Medicine (SIMIV). He also plays a significant role as a board member of the executive committee of the ECVIM-CA congress. Furthermore, he contributes to the academic landscape as an editor of the peer-reviewed journal "Veterinaria."
His scholarly contributions are extensive and diverse, spanning journal articles, research abstracts, case reports, and book chapters. Notably, he co-edited the book "Feline Endocrinology" alongside Edward Feldman and Mark Peterson, published by Edra in 2019.
