  • More about Dundee at War 1939 45

During the Second World War, Dundee's industries were of importance to the war effort, with the jute and shipbuilding industries being particularly busy. The city was only bombed on twenty-four occasions, but it played a significant role in the war at sea, with HMS Ambrose being home to a major Royal Navy submarine base. Many Dundee men and women served in the armed forces during the war, and many received decorations for their bravery, including Wing Commander Gordon Hugh Malcolm, who received the first RAF VC awarded for action in North Africa.

During the Second World War, a significant number of industries in Dundee played crucial roles in supporting the war effort. The jute industry, which had previously dominated the local economy, faced severe challenges during the 1930s. However, the war brought a temporary boost to the industry as the material was in high demand for use in sandbags. The shipbuilding industry, too, played a vital role, with the Caledon Yards bustling throughout the conflict. The yard refitted two Polish submarines at the onset of the war and constructed a number of Castle and Loch Class frigates, as well as several merchant vessels. Given its strategic importance, Dundee was considered a potential target for the Luftwaffe. Fortunately, the city escaped relatively unscathed, with only twenty-four bombings occurring. Dundee also played a significant role at sea, hosting a major Royal Navy submarine base, HMS Ambrose. As a result, sailors from Britain, its Empire, France, and Norway became an integral part of the wartime scene in Dundee. Many Dundee men and women served in the armed forces during the war, and the city suffered significant casualties. Nonetheless, many individuals received decorations for their bravery, including Wing Commander Gordon Hugh Malcolm, who received the first RAF VC awarded for action in North Africa.
