The Anthropocene debate, initiated by Paul Crutzen and Eugene F. Stoermer in 2000, has blurred traditional disciplinary boundaries and requires actors to negotiate evidence practices in inter- and transdisciplinary spaces. Fabienne Will describes it as a trading zone where central questions about humanity's future are negotiated, as well as fundamental understandings of evidence production and safeguarding.

In 2000, the introduction of the term "Anthropocene" by atmospheric chemist Paul Crutzen and limnologist Eugene F. Stoermer ignited a scientific debate that swiftly gained momentum and is currently being negotiated across a diverse array of disciplines. The traditional boundaries between disciplinary cultures of knowledge production are increasingly blurred, necessitating the involvement of actors to transcend their respective domains and engage in negotiations with other groups of actors to secure evidence. The practices of evidence production are subjected to pressure to legitimize, leading to renegotiations within the inter- and transdisciplinary space. Fabienne Will portrays the Anthropocene debate as a trading zone, where central questions concerning humanity's present and future on Earth, as well as fundamental understandings of evidence production and safeguarding, are negotiated.
