Julian Steward discovered hundreds of well-worn moccasins, mittens, bison robe fragments, bows, arrows, pottery, bone and stone tools, cordage, gaming pieces, and abundant faunal remains at Utah's Promontory Caves site, making it one of the most remarkable hunter-gatherer archaeological records in western North America. This volume connects Steward's work with results from new excavations and illustrates that the early Promontory Phase resulted from an intrusive large-game hunting population different from nearby late Fremont communities.

From 1930 to 1931,Julian Steward unearthed a remarkable collection of well-worn moccasins, mittens, bison robe fragments, bows, arrows, pottery, bone and stone tools, cordage, gaming pieces, and abundant faunal remains at Utah's Promontory Caves site. Despite recognizing that these artifacts were characteristic of the Canadian Subarctic and northern Plains rather than the Great Basin, Steward's findings remained largely unnoticed for decades. This comprehensive volume brings together Steward's work with recent excavations at Promontory Caves 1 and 2, shedding light on the early Promontory Phase. It reveals that this period was characterized by the presence of a distinct large-game hunting population, which was different from the nearby late Fremont communities. The cave occupants, who lasted for only one or two human generations, gradually incorporated people, material, and symbolic culture from their thirteenth-century neighbors. Volume contributors employ a transdisciplinary approach to assess the possibility that the Promontory Phase materials reflect the presence of Apachean ancestors. Within these records lie the foundations for the extensive Plains-Puebloan interactions that followed over the centuries.
