It is a Sunday morning on the 4th of August, 1577, in the small town of Bongay, located in North Suffolk. A violent thunderstorm strikes the town, and the church, unfortunately, becomes a victim of the lightning. Tragically, two parishioners lose their lives, while another is severely injured. Shortly after, a pamphlet circulates, claiming that the deaths and injuries were caused by a giant, ghostly black dog that broke down the church door and ran up and down the aisle, attacking everyone in its path.
The Bishop of Norwich, aware of the seriousness of the situation, sends Captain Richard Brightwell to investigate the mystery. Accompanied by his servant Humfry Trip, his secretary John Kettle, and Augustyn, his seven-foot-tall mute bodyguard, the team sets out to uncover the truth. As they delve deeper into the town, they quickly realize that not everyone is who they seem to be. They navigate through a medieval football match and encounter early street theatre, all while becoming embroiled in a web of mayhem, mystery, and murder.
The investigation takes them to various places in the town, including the church, the local tavern, and the homes of the townspeople. They encounter a cast of characters, each with their own secrets and motivations. They witness strange occurrences, such as the appearance of a ghostly figure in the church and the sudden disappearance of a local man.
As they gather more evidence, the team begins to suspect that there is a deeper plot at work. They discover that the town is plagued by a centuries-old curse, and the black dog is a manifestation of that curse. The team must use all their skills and resources to break the curse and bring peace to the town.
In a climactic confrontation, the team faces off against the black dog and its evil master. With the help of a powerful spell, they are able to defeat the dog and break the curse. The town is finally free from the grip of the curse, and the team returns home, hailed as heroes.
The mystery of the black dog and the curse of Bongay remains a legend to this day, and the townspeople continue to celebrate the bravery and ingenuity of Captain Brightwell and his team.
