It theorizes teaching and activism in creative tension, with three contentious concepts: quality, patrimony, and governability. The book describes and analyzes how activism and teaching intertwine on the city streets and in the rural schools, revealing how operating critically transcends a centered critical project. It is timely, as the activism-schooling nexus has just begun to generate interest with high-profile events on and around campuses worldwide.

                                                            Format: Paperback / softback
Length: 266 pages
Publication date: 13 May 2019
Publisher: Peter Lang Publishing Inc

Research has established a link between social movements and education, yet there is a notable lack of studies that focus specifically on classroom practices. In this ethnography, we explore the unique experiences of Oaxacan teachers, who are political and pedagogical pioneers who navigate between the streets and schools. This book emerges from the intersection of politics in classrooms and the manifestations and rural primary communities in a significant migration-sending region of Southeastern Mexico.

Movements on the Streets and in Schools delves into the complex relationship between teaching and activism, positing that these two spheres exist in a state of creative tension, as described by Anna Tsing's concept of the "friction of global connection." Within this framework, three contentious concepts emerge: quality, patrimony, and governability. Through the lens of these concepts, this book aims to describe and analyze how activism and teaching intertwine on the city streets and in the rural schools.

In the context of Oaxacan classrooms, teaching emerges as a dynamic practice that transcends the boundaries of traditional critical projects. It becomes a means of responding to the ever-changing political and social landscape, where uprisings, police raids, and austerity reforms shape the educational landscape. Teaching reveals how operating critically extends beyond a narrow focus on critique and encompasses a broader understanding of the social and political context in which education takes place.

For instance, the concept of quality holds different meanings for different stakeholders. To state and corporate philanthropists, quality often signifies standardization and the pursuit of measurable outcomes. However, parents and pupils rally around quality education as a means to demand learning-centered schools that prioritize the development of critical thinking and creativity. Similarly, patrimony can be perceived as a tool for heritage preservation and tourism, but it also provides teachers with legal grounds.

Patrimony allows them to claim labor rights on historical grounds, challenging the dominant narratives that often marginalize the contributions of educators. Lastly, governability, which is a key concern for Global Southern countries like Mexico, takes on a pedagogical dimension when state authorities fail to govern effectively. In such cases, police raids against teachers and cuts to public education become pedagogical challenges that educators must address.

Movements on the Streets and in Schools is particularly timely, as the activism-schooling nexus has recently gained significant attention worldwide. This book is valuable for both pre- and in-service teachers, education activists, administrators, and professors alike. It offers insights into the complex dynamics that shape education in times of social and political unrest, and provides practical strategies for educators to engage with the broader social and political context in which they operate.

In conclusion, this book offers a unique perspective on the relationship between social movements and education, highlighting the role of teachers as political and pedagogical pioneers. Through the lens of quality, patrimony, and governability, it explores how activism and teaching intertwine on the city streets and in the rural schools, challenging traditional notions of criticality and providing a framework for educators to engage with the broader social and political context in which they operate.

                            Weight: 404g
Dimension: 152 x 225 x 16 (mm)
ISBN-13: 9781433153822
Edition number: New ed

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0522/4297/2845/products/aa6e574def498fa659a751fda5b30bf8.jpg?v=1627956349
https://shulphink.com/products/movements-on-the-streets-and-in-schools-state-repression-neoliberal-reforms-and-oaxaca-teacher-counter-pedagogies
