  • More about Port of Southampton

In 1836, the Southampton Dock Company was authorized to construct a dock at Southampton, and the Eastern Docks were developed in the 1830s. The Outer Dock was opened in 1842 and the Inner Dock in 1851, followed by the Empress Dock in 1890. The Port of Southampton is now the United Kingdom's premier passenger port and the second-largest container facility, handling over 1.5 million containers annually. In 1836, a parliamentary act granted the Southampton Dock Company the authority to construct a dock at Southampton. The construction of the new docks commenced on October 12, 1838, marking the beginning of a significant development project. The Eastern Docks were established in the 1830s, followed by the Inner and Outer Docks. The Outer Dock was officially opened in 1842, while the Inner Dock was completed eight years later, in 1851. As trade and commerce flourished, the existing facilities became insufficient to accommodate the growing demands. Consequently, in 1890, Queen Victoria inaugurated a new dock named Empress Dock. Subsequently, the port facilities were nationalized and later privatized. Today, the Port of Southampton stands as the United Kingdom's premier passenger port and ranks as the second largest container facility, handling over 1.5 million containers annually. In his book, Ian Collard showcases a magnificent collection of photographs that vividly depict the captivating story of this renowned port.
