Traditionally, scholars have viewed the kingdom's strength as contingent upon the king's ability to manipulate and control the power of the nobility. However, this study challenges the prevailing historiographical narrative and presents a different perspective. It argues that the Ottonians' royal power was not solely derived from their control over the nobility but also from their own immense wealth, unique authority, and the power granted by the royal bannum. Through the exercise of this authority, the Ottonians were able to harness the economic resources and labor of the broad free population of the realm, as well as those of the Church.
