Theodore Metochites (1270-1332) stands as one of the most significant figures in the Byzantine Empire, excelling as a writer, thinker, and statesman. Alongside his rival Nikephoros Choumnos (1250-1327), Metochites played a pivotal role in shaping the philosophical and cultural landscape of Constantinople during the early fourteenth century. Both men held the esteemed title of mesazon (??????), a highly influential position within the Byzantine government. Their activities coincided with the controversy surrounding the divine light and mystic contemplation (Hesychasm) that erupted in 1340. Prior to the synods convened to determine Gregory Palamas' orthodoxy, Metochites and Choumnos had already taken monastic vows, ultimately contributing to Palamas' triumph (Synods of Constantinople of 1341, 1347, 1351). Renowned for his artistic patronage, Metochites retired to the Monastery of Saint Saviour in Chora (Kariye Camii), where he left an indelible mark through his magnificent mosaics and frescoes. These artistic treasures serve as remarkable testament to Byzantine aesthetics. Metochites' literary contributions, spanning the Byzantine era, are presented in this volume by esteemed specialists in his work.
