Over the past few decades, universities have welcomed students whose parents and grandparents were historically excluded from societal participation and higher education due to racial, ethnic, socio-economic, and/or linguistic diversity. Many of these students are first-generation learners, or the first in their family to attend university. While some progress has been made in addressing the needs of these internationally underserved learners, numerous challenges persist.
This edited book presents the unique and diverse experiences of first-generation students as they transition into and engage with higher education, while also exploring ways in which universities can better serve these students. Drawing from culturally responsive and sustaining research methodologies conducted in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, the UK, and the USA, the contributors critically examine how these students demonstrate resilience within university settings and how success and challenges are articulated. Elements that are specific to particular contexts and shared across the international higher education milieu are explored. The book is rich in diverse student voices and offers compelling implications for practice and future research. The studies featured are centered on underlying theories of identity and intersectionality while valuing student voices and experiences. Throughout, the emphasis is on utilizing strengths-based indigenous and decolonized methodologies. These culturally sustaining approaches, including critical incident technique, participatory learning and action, talanoa, and narrative inquiry, allow for the exploration of rich data on first-generation student experiences at seven institutions across six countries across four continents.
In conclusion, universities have made significant strides in opening their doors to students from historically marginalized backgrounds. However, there is still much work to be done to ensure that these students receive the support and resources they need to succeed. By adopting culturally responsive and sustaining research methodologies and valuing the voices and experiences of first-generation students, universities can better serve these students and contribute to a more inclusive and equitable higher education system.
