- More about 1066: The Lost Hastings Battlefield
The year 1066 is a date in English history that changed the way people lived and were governed, as well as transforming the language of the land. This book finds that the traditional site of the Battle of Hastings, where King Harold met his end, is not where the battle was actually fought. The author has used satellite imagery and historical accounts to confirm the location of the old Cinque port of Hastings and the site of Duke William's pre-battle camp on Blackhorse Hill, two miles east of the traditional site at Battle Abbey. It is hoped that this will inspire researchers to expand upon these findings.

The year 1066 holds a significant place in English history, marking a transformative period that altered the lives of people and governed the land. Astonishingly, the traditional site where the renowned Battle of Hastings took place is not the actual location where the conflict unfolded. Following the death of King Edward the Confessor in January 1066, rival claims for the English throne emerged from Norwegian King Harald Hardrada, Duke William of Normandy, and the English magnate Harold Godwinson. These claims culminated in the epic Battle of Hastings later that year, which settled the disputes and determined the future of England.
This book delves into the captivating story, beginning with the Norman duke's crossing of the English Channel in a fleet of Viking-inspired longboats from St. Valery on the French coast. It follows the journey to the final battle, fought on Blackhorse Hill, located approximately two miles east of the traditional site at Battle Abbey. It was on this historic hill that King Harold met his demise, surrounded and attacked by Norman knights in the closing stages of the battle.
To provide context to the main narrative, the story extends from the Viking invasion of Lindisfarne to William's crossing of the Channel and the events leading up to his death. The sequence of events presented here is based on various historic accounts and meticulous alignment of events with the terrain described, a challenging process involving trial and error to accurately locate the battle site on Blackhorse Hill.
The author has made use of satellite imagery, previously unavailable to previous authors, to confirm the location of the old Cinque port of Hastings, first proposed by Nick Austin in his Secrets of the Norman Invasion. This port played a crucial role.
