The third book of Makkaba reports on the attempt of King Ptolemy IV in 216 BC to destroy all Jews in Alexandria and Egypt and razor Jerusalem to the ground. The Jews pleaded with God for salvation, and God intervened, resulting in the Hellenistic king being lucid and the Jews being saved. Ptolemy is not the new Pharaoh of the Exodus, but a Macedonian foreign ruler over Egypt, whom the Jews can faithfully serve in the diaspora. The book provides an insight into the history and internal discussions of diaspora Judaism in Greco-Roman Egypt.

The third book of Makkaba, written in the early first century BC, chronicles the attempt of King Ptolemy IV to exterminate the Jewish population in Alexandria and Egypt, followed by the destruction of Jerusalem. Unlike the previous two books of the Maccabees, where the Jews fought back, the Jews in this book pleaded with God for salvation. Despite facing immense adversity, God intervened on several occasions, ultimately leading to the downfall of the Hellenistic king and the salvation of the Jewish people. It is important to note that Ptolemy was not the new Pharaoh of the Exodus, but rather a Macedonian foreign ruler who ruled over Egypt. The book provides valuable insight into the history and internal discussions of diaspora Judaism in Greco-Roman Egypt.

The present volume, in a verse-by-verse commentary, examines and explains the political, cultural, historical, and theological context of the text. It sheds light on the social, political, and religious landscape of the time, as well as the beliefs and practices of the Jewish community in Egypt. The commentary also delves into the literary and rhetorical aspects of the text, exploring its style, structure, and symbolism. By providing a comprehensive analysis of the Maccabees III, this volume offers a deeper understanding of the historical and cultural significance of the Maccabee books and their role in shaping the Jewish identity and heritage.
