Leicestershire is a captivating and diverse county that draws in a multitude of visitors with its picturesque countryside, bustling market towns, and historic buildings. The place names themselves provide evidence of the Roman, Saxon, and Norman settlements that have shaped its history. The Normans, in particular, left their mark with the construction of castles and churches, although many of these structures have now fallen into ruins. Nonetheless, Leicestershire boasts some of the most stunning parish churches in the country.

The Tudor era was born in Leicestershire when Henry Tudor defeated Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field in August 1485. Centuries later, in 2012, an ambitious excavation project uncovered the remains of Richard III under the site of a Leicester car park. These remains were subsequently reinterred in the city's cathedral.

During the Industrial Revolution, Leicestershire saw the creation of canals and railways, which have since become popular heritage sites. The county is also renowned for its Stilton cheese and Melton Mowbray pork pies, which are celebrated worldwide.

Rutland, England's smallest county, was once incorporated into its larger neighbor, Leicestershire. Its motto, "Much in Little," aptly describes its charm. Rutland has been described as a picturesque slice of Middle England, brimming with attractions and activities for visitors.

In his book, "50 Gems of Leicestershire & Rutland," local author Michael Smith showcases some of his favorite places from both counties. He has carefully selected locations and sites that offer a genuine taste of these shires, nestled in the heart of England. The book features historic buildings, parks, open spaces, events, and festivals that reflect Leicestershire and Rutland's rich heritage and diverse cultures. From the meandering River Soar, which traces a thousand years of history, to the vast expanse of Rutland Water, and from Bronze Age to Jet Age monuments, this illustrated insight provides a wonderful glimpse into these counties.

Leicestershire and Rutland are truly treasures that offer a rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty to explore. Whether you are interested in medieval ruins, picturesque countryside, or culinary delights, these counties have something to offer for every visitor.
