On May 22nd, 2015, the people of Ireland made history by voting overwhelmingly in favor of marriage equality, making Ireland the first country in the world to introduce gay marriage through a popular vote. It was a remarkable turn of events considering the country's 20th-century history, which had been marked by discrimination and criminalization of homosexuality. In 1982, the Irish Supreme Court issued a warning that "homosexual conduct may lead a mildly homosexually-orientated person into a way of life from which he may never recover." Homosexuality remained illegal until 1993. However, a long and arduous struggle by determined activists, coupled with the individual efforts and sacrifices of thousands of ordinary people, slowly paved the way for the advocacy of gay rights and, ultimately, marriage equality. Colin Murphy's documentary drama, based on interviews conducted by journalist Charlie Bird, captures the essence of this fight, culminating in the intense campaign weeks leading up to the historic vote. The film intertwines the personal stories of those affected by the movement with the broader narrative, providing a poignant and powerful portrayal of the journey toward equality. This edition of the film was released in conjunction with the presentation of "A Day in May" at Dublin's Pavilion Theatre in Dun Laoghaire in October 2022.
