Xa Tollemache embarked on her gardening journey when she relocated to Helmingham Hall in Suffolk in 1975, at the tender age of a young wife and mother. Over the next twenty years, she dedicated herself to acquiring knowledge and subsequently refining and enhancing the gardens. Helmingham, according to her, played a pivotal role in shaping her gardening skills to such an extent that by 1996, she was able to establish her garden design practice.

Xa Tollemache views this book, her inaugural publication, as a narrative, recounting the enchanting love affair she had with the garden at Helmingham. It serves as a testament to her career as a garden designer, showcased through eleven other gardens, both large and small, where she has applied her design prowess. These gardens include her very first Chelsea Flower Show garden, which was met with praise as "just an amateur," although she did secure a Gold Medal. Additionally, she has designed gardens in Dunbeath, Caithness, Castle Hill, Devon, Cholmondley, Cheshire, Bighton, Hampshire, Wilton, Wiltshire, Aldeburgh, Suffolk, Bell House, Suffolk, Stone House, Suffolk, and the garden at her new residence, Framsden Hall in Suffolk.
