  • More about A Partially Auxetic Metamaterial Inspired by the Maltese Cross

A partially-auxetic metamaterial is designed with a two-fold symmetrical mechanism and (anti)tetrachiral mechanisms for on-axis tension and compression, and a shearing mechanism for pure shearing and diagonal loading with square array. It exhibits microstructural trinity, with three different loading modes resulting in three different groups of deformation mechanisms. Suggestions are provided for unsolved predictive problems.

A partially-auxetic metamaterial is presented, drawing inspiration from the Maltese cross. This metamaterial comprises individual units consisting of a pair of counter-rotating equal-armed crosses, interconnected through hinge rods and connecting rods to neighboring units. By employing linkage theory, the on-axes Poisson's ratio is established, considering a two-fold symmetrical mechanism. Additionally, (anti)tetrachiral mechanisms are identified for on-axes uniaxial compression. A shearing mechanism is proposed for pure shearing and diagonal loading of the metamaterial with square array.

The results indicate that the approximated infinitesimal models hold validity for the Poisson's ratio of the two-fold symmetrical and (anti)tetrachiral mechanisms under on-axis tension and compression, respectively. However, it is recommended to use the finite model for quantifying the Poisson's ratio under pure shear and off-axis loading. This metamaterial exhibits a microstructural trinity, wherein three distinct loading modes trigger three different groups of deformation mechanisms.

Furthermore, suggestions are made for addressing some unresolved predictive problems in this field.
