Arthur, driven by a sense of duty and adventure, eagerly volunteered for aircrew service with the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1940, at the tender age of 19, as soon as his school examinations were completed. His determination and unwavering spirit propelled him forward as he embarked on a rigorous training journey that would shape his future.

Arthur's training took him to various locations, including Canada and Florida, where he honed his skills and acquired the knowledge necessary to become a skilled airman. He underwent intensive training in various disciplines, including aircraft maintenance, navigation, and combat techniques. His dedication and commitment to his training were evident in his exceptional performance, which earned him the respect and admiration of his instructors.

After completing his training, Arthur was assigned to 97 Squadron, a Lancaster bomber unit, in December 1942. He quickly integrated into the squadron and formed strong bonds with his fellow crew members. Together, they embarked on a series of missions, including the shuttle-service attack on Friedrichshaven and the daring attack against Peenemunde.

In April 1943, the crew transferred to Pathfinder Force, where they continued to showcase their bravery and skill. Their operations took them to various parts of Europe, including Germany and Norway, where they faced formidable challenges and encountered enemy resistance. Arthur's unwavering determination and exceptional flying skills played a crucial role in the success of these missions.

As the war progressed, Arthur's service to the RAF took him to the Mediterranean theatre, where he flew five further operations. Three of these operations were in Halifaxes, while the other two were in Wellingtons, the latter in support of the Yugoslav resistance. His missions were fraught with danger and uncertainty, but Arthur's courage and resilience saw him through each challenge.

In December 1944, Arthur returned to the United Kingdom and joined Transport Command before being seconded to BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation). His transition from the front lines to the skies was a testament to his versatility and adaptability as a soldier.

Arthur's direct and detailed account of his experiences is a fascinating and valuable document of an astonishing feat. To be exposed to such danger and to survive to tell the tale is a testament to his unwavering spirit and resilience. His story serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals during World War II and the bravery and determination that characterized the aircrew who served in the RAF.

Arthur's journey from a young schoolboy to a seasoned airman is a testament to the power of determination and the indomitable human spirit. His experiences remind us of the importance of honoring the memory of those who served and the sacrifices they made for our freedom and security.
