  • More about A Postcolonial Political Theology of Care and Praxis in Ethiopia's Era of Identity Politics: Reframing Hegemonic and Fragmented Identities through Subjective In-Betweenness

Identity politics eliminates Ethiopians' in-between spaces and identities, leading to either-or class, religious, ethnic, and gender categories. The author proposes an in-between theology that invites Ethiopians to a new hybrid way of being to resist fragmented and hegemonic identities. Postcolonial discourse and praxis of in-between pastoral care disrupts and interrogates hegemonic definitions of culture, home, subjectivity, and identity, while in-between pastoral care uses embodiment, belonging, subjectivity, and hybridity to create intercultural and intersubjective identities that can co-construct and co-create in-between spaces.

The author contends that identity politics obliterates the intermediary spaces and identities of Ethiopians, characterizing them as political, social, religious, and geographical realms that foster equitable coexistence, solidarity, and justice among Ethiopians. The eradication of these intermediary spaces and identities leads to the formation of rigid either-or categories such as class, religious, ethnic, and gender identities. Consequently, the author suggests an in-between theology that beckons Ethiopians to embrace a novel hybrid way of being, enabling them to resist fragmented and hegemonic identities. The author asserts that postcolonial discourse and practices of in-between pastoral care challenge and interrogate dominant definitions of culture, home, subjectivity, and identity. On the other hand, in-between pastoral care employs embodiment, belonging, subjectivity, and hybridity as central aspects of care and praxis to establish intercultural and intersubjective identities capable of co-constructing and co-creating intermediary spaces. Within these intermediary spaces, Ethiopians can engage with the Other through intercultural competencies, enabling them to live their differences, similarities, hybridity, and complexity.
