  • More about A Womanist Reading of Hebrew Bible Narratives as the Politics of Belonging from an Outsider Within

The U.S. Declaration of Independence of 1776 declared that all men were created equal, but Black people were not recognized as citizens with equal protections under the law until the Fourteenth Amendment. White supremacists used biblical passages to justify their views, including Noah's curse, Sarah and Hagar, Mother in Israel, and Jezebel, Phoenician Princess and Queen of Israel. A Womanist Reading of Hebrew Bible Narratives as the Politics of Belonging from an Outsider Within analyzes how these narratives were used to include and exclude certain groups as members of the nation of Israel and then appropriated by White supremacists in America.

The U.S. Declaration of Independence of 1776 proclaimed that all individuals were created equal and bestowed with "certain unalienable Rights" by their Creator. However, it took until the passage of the Fourteenth Amendment for U.S.-born free and enslaved Black people to be recognized as citizens with "equal protections under the law." Even then, White supremacists hindered the equal rights of Black people as citizens due to their beliefs in the inferiority of Black people and the notion that America was a nation for White people. To justify their views, White supremacists turned to biblical passages, which they used to exclude certain groups from the nation of Israel and to deny inclusion to others in America. A Womanist Reading of Hebrew Bible Narratives as the Politics of Belonging from an Outsider Within examines how ancient biblical writers used these narratives to include some and exclude others as members of the nation of Israel, and how White supremacists later appropriated them to do the same in America. The book explores the complex intersections and connections between race, gender, class, and sexuality and biblical narratives, highlighting how these narratives have been used to construct boundaries between "us versus them," particularly through the politicization of motherhood to deny certain groups inclusion.
