Glaspasten, exquisite replicas of gemstones crafted in glass, were painstakingly produced during the 18th century, often being rarer and more expensive than their gips-abguss counterparts in Daktyliotheken. The renowned manufacturer of Würzburger Glaspasten was Philipp Daniel Lippert (1702–1785), who pioneered the first systematically organized and documented Daktyliothek, featuring an extensive collection. This collection stands as the earliest of its kind.

The second volume of the Würzburger Glaspasten series primarily showcases engravings and intaglios from the 16th and 17th centuries, adorned with ancient motifs that are mostly lost to history. During the 18th century, most people regarded these pieces as antiques. This chapter marks the beginning of scientific gemmology, with J. F. Christ (1700–1756) emerging as one of its pioneering figures.
