The Alma-Ata Declaration of 1978 was a landmark document that aimed to improve citizen health by prioritizing primary health care in low- and middle-income countries. While progress in many countries stalled in the 1980s, some countries embraced the declaration and saw significant improvements in their citizens' health. Achieving Health for All, a book published by the World Health Organization, explores how seven countries, inspired by the Alma-Ata Declaration, implemented comprehensive primary health care systems. These countries deployed new cadres of community-based health workers who provided relevant services to ordinary households. The book provides narrative case studies from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Nepal, Ghana, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam, highlighting how a primary health care focus succeeded in improving population health. It also demonstrates that comprehensive, multisector, community-controlled, and population-level primary health care is a viable strategy that can lead to sustainable, scalable good health at lower cost. The book brings together a group of experts to analyze the forty-year legacy of the Alma-Ata Declaration and offers valuable lessons learned that can guide policymakers in creating policies that support the health of all people.
