This book delves into the lives of Africans in provincial England during the early modern period, shedding light on their arrival, perception, and historical experiences. From 1467, when the first documented reference to an African in Norfolk and Suffolk emerged, to 1833, when Parliament voted to abolish slavery in the British Empire, the book explores the complexities of these Africans' historical journey.

Richard C. Maguire suggests that the initial regional response to arriving Africans was not solely defined by ideas related to skin color but rather by local understandings of religious status, class position, freedom and bondage, and immediate local circumstances. Arriving Africans had the opportunity to integrate into the region's working population through baptism, marriage, parenthood, and work. However, this response was challenged as local merchants and gentry began engaging with the slaving economy from the mid-seventeenth century onwards.

While racialized ideas underpinning Atlantic slavery altered the social circumstances of Africans in the region, the book argues that they did not completely displace older, more inclusive ideas within working communities. The book provides a rich and nuanced understanding of the lives of Africans in provincial England during this period, challenging prevailing narratives and illuminating the complex interplay of local customs, class structures, traditions, memory, and the impact of the Atlantic slaving economy.
