- More about Air Atlantique
Air Atlantique was a Jersey-based air taxi operator that began by purchasing two elderly Dakota aircraft for cargo charters in 1976. It grew to operate one of the largest fleets of Dakotas in the world, acquire four-engined vintage propliners, diversify into passenger charters and pleasure flying, and take over the lease on its Coventry Airport base. The airline's founder, Mike Collett, retired, but freight charters and pleasure flying continued until new regulations brought passenger flying in the Dakotas to an end. Air Atlantique opened an aviation museum and visitor center at Coventry.

In 1976, a Jersey-based air taxi operator, Air Atlantique, embarked on a remarkable journey by acquiring two elderly Dakota aircraft for cargo charters. This marked the inception of an airline that would go on to achieve extraordinary feats. Over time, Air Atlantique expanded its fleet to include a vast array of Dakotas, becoming one of the world's largest operators of these aircraft. Their expansion did not stop there; they also acquired four-engined vintage propliners, diversified into passenger charters and pleasure flying, and even ventured into oil-spill response work. Furthermore, they took over the lease on their Coventry Airport base, providing a solid foundation for their operations.
With a fleet of historic aircraft at their disposal, Air Atlantique embarked on a series of air shows around the UK, captivating audiences with their majestic presence. However, the impending retirement of the airline's founder, Mike Collett, brought about changes that would shape the future of Air Atlantique. Despite these challenges, the freight charters and pleasure flying continued to thrive until new regulations brought passenger flying in the Dakotas to an end. Undeterred, Air Atlantique remained resilient and embarked on a new venture. They opened an aviation museum and visitor center at Coventry, dedicated to preserving the legacy of the airline and sharing its rich history with the public.
Air Atlantique's story is a testament to the indomitable spirit of entrepreneurship and the unwavering passion for aviation. It is a tale of a unique and much-loved British airline that has left an indelible mark on the aviation industry. The airline's journey from humble beginnings to global prominence is a testament to the power of vision, determination, and a commitment to excellence. As we reflect on the history of Air Atlantique, we are reminded of the importance of preserving the legacy of airlines like this and celebrating the contributions they have made to the world of aviation.
