Alberuni, also known as Abu Raihan, was a contemporary of Sultan Mahmud of Ghazni, the first independent ruler of the Turkic dynasty of Ghaznavids, who ruled during AD 997-1030. He left behind a monumental account in Arabic, known as Tahqiq ma lil-Hind (AD 1030), which is commonly referred to as Indica in English. While Mahmud was engaged in plundering the cities and temples of India, Alberuni dedicated himself to studying the culture and civilization of the country. His account includes various aspects of Brahmanical India, such as religion, philosophy, literature, mathematics, astronomy, physics, chemistry, geography, customs, laws, and astrology. Alberuni aimed to familiarize individuals with India who wished to converse with the Hindus and engage in discussions on religion, science, or literature based on his own civilization.
