Rewritten text:

Alexandria, founded by Alexander the Great in 332 BC, held the distinction of being the largest city in the ancient world for a considerable period. However, its grandeur was tragically diminished when it was flattened by a devastating tsunami in 365 AD. When Napoleon captured the city in 1798, it had transformed into a mere fishing village. The 19th century witnessed a remarkable transformation as Alexandria emerged as the epicenter of the Egyptian cotton trade, bringing prosperity and an influx of European merchants. Yet, the city's history was marked by a series of seismic events. In 1882, it faced another devastating bombardment by the English, which nearly flattened the city a second time. The revolution of 1952 further compounded its challenges, condemning many of its residential buildings to a slow and picturesque decay.

The architectural landscape of Alexandria is a tapestry woven with the influences of history and diverse cultures. Classical ruins, Ottoman fortifications, Egyptian okelles (medieval merchant buildings), a vibrant fishing port, mosques, shrines, churches, and synagogues dot the cityscape. Mansions and apartment buildings in neo-Renaissance, art deco, and international styles stand as testament to the city's architectural diversity. Additionally, there are peculiar anomalies such as the Cotton Palace Tower, a skyscraper that was intended to serve as the headquarters of the country's cotton industry but was inexplicably abandoned before completion.

This comprehensive book, the first systematic guide to the architecture of Alexandria, is the collective effort of numerous enthusiastic hands. The texts and photographs were meticulously produced by students and staff at the Architecture Faculty of Alexandria University. The book offers a captivating journey through the city's architectural heritage, providing a deep insight into its rich history and diverse architectural styles. Whether you are an architect, historian, or simply a lover of architecture, this book is a valuable resource that will enrich your understanding and appreciation of Alexandria's architectural marvels.
