These sketchbooks hold an extraordinary tale, crafted during Alfred Walliss final year in 1942, when he resided in the Penzance poorhouse. They shed fresh light on his profound contribution to the evolution of modern art in Britain. Hailing from a Cornish maritime background and a scrap metal dealer, Walliss was a self-taught artist who embarked on his artistic journey in the aftermath of his wife's passing three years prior, in approximately 1925. During the late 1920s, he exerted a significant influence on artists such as Winifred and Ben Nicholson, as well as Christopher Wood. His straightforward and direct style conveyed a profound truth of experience, which also came to embody the essence of St Ives as an art community that cherished his genuine expression. Walliss' artistic legacy continues to inspire artists to this day. This book presents the contents of three sketchbooks meticulously filled with Walliss' drawings, accompanied by an introduction by curator Andrew Wilson. It provides a remarkable glimpse into Walliss' art of memory, rendered tangible.

Ben Nicholson, in his assessment, vehemently disagreed with the notion that Wallis' art was merely representational. He asserted that Wallis' art was, in fact, authentic, devoid of any pretenses or artifices. This profound recognition of Walliss' artistic integrity highlights the enduring impact of his work and its profound significance in the realm of modern art.
