Sforza has his own bastard, Benito Valdosta, who is returning to Venice after having conquered the Byzantine empire. Count Mindaug has decided to settle in Milan, and if he aids the usurper, he will arouse the fury of the Holy Roman Empire and the Knights of the Holy Trinity. The snake-god of plague, Orkise, has been awakened by Lucia del Maino, the illegitimate daughter of the recently overthrown Duke of Milan, Phillipo Visconti. Lucia, wielding the venomous magic of Orkise, plots to marry and then assassinate the usurper who now rules Milan, the condottiere Carlo Sforza, also known as the Wolf of the North.

Meanwhile, another trouble brews. Sforza has his own bastard, Benito Valdosta, who is returning to Venice after conquering the Byzantine empire. Benito seeks revenge against his father and will have the support of his half-brother Marco, the embodiment of the ancient Etruria's mighty Winged Lion of St. Mark.

Adding to Sforza's predicament, the terrifying sorcerer Count Mindaug has decided to settle in Milan. Will he ally with Sforza or oppose him? Either way, it will bring trouble, as Mindaug's aid to the usurper will anger the Holy Roman Empire and the Knights of the Holy Trinity, who have sworn to destroy Mindaug and anyone who shelters him.

Sforza has only the skill and cunning of his physician, Francisco Turner, who is on good terms with the Valdosta brothers and may be able to neutralize Venetian hostility. However, even if Turner can, will it be enough to save the Wolf of the North? For Orkise, the snake-god of plague, is unleashing all the plagues of hell in the countryside of northern Italy.
