  • More about Alliances in Asia and Europe: The Evolving Indo-Pacific Strategic Context and Inter-Regional Alignments

The book explores the transformation of American-led alliances and their responses to potential American disengagement from regional security amid rising Russian and Chinese threats. It highlights the challenges of the post-Cold War international order, including the end of the Cold War, the decline of the US, and the involvement of a great power in a war on European territory. The chapters provide a comparative framework for examining security alignments in Europe and Asia.

The post-Cold War international order has presented the West with three significant challenges. The first challenge arises from the end of the Cold War, which served as the foundation for the US-centered alliance systems in Europe and Asia. The second challenge is the gradual decline of the US, which has transformed the fear of US disengagement into a question of capability. Additionally, the third challenge is the unprecedented involvement of a great power, such as Russia, in a war on European territory.

In Europe, the immediate consequence of the war has been a strengthening of NATO. However, regional reactions to the war have been more muted in Asia and the Indo-Pacific, as the division between "friends and foes" remains less clear-cut than in Europe. The chapters in this volume bridge the dynamics between the European and Asian theaters and provide a comparative framework for examining security alignments amidst the shifting strategic context of the Indo-Pacific.

This book, with its 4 new chapters and revised Introduction, is of great interest to students and researchers of Politics and International Relations, Asian and European studies. The other chapters were originally published in Asian Affairs.
