  • More about Amie Siegel: Ricochet

Amie Siegel's exhibitions Black Moon and Ricochet were conceived as a single show unfolding over time and space. The artist created two mirrored books, bound together into one volume, with illustrations that offer endless possibilities to combine the artworks. The themes and motifs include the archaeology of cinema, image provenance, psychoanalysis, and economies of gender, and the book includes essays by Tom McDonough and Sven Beckstette, as well as a conversation between Amie Siegel and Ulrike Groos.

Amie Siegel's artistic practice is marked by a distinct set of characteristics, including duplication, repetition, appropriation, and adaptation. In 2011 and 2016, the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart organized two exhibitions dedicated to her work, titled "Black Moon" and "Ricochet." While these exhibitions were presented five years apart, they were conceived as a cohesive and evolving show that unfolded across time and space.

As the exhibitions transitioned between each other, visual motifs and ideas found expression in the artist's concept of the catalogue. Instead of consolidating both presentations into a single publication, Siegel collaborated with graphic designer Kerstin Riedel to create two mirrored books that are bound together as a single volume. Upon opening the catalogue, one is greeted with two double spreads that offer endless possibilities for combining the illustrations of Siegel's artworks.

The themes and motifs scattered across the exhibitions through various mediums, including performance, video, and works on paper, encompass a wide range of subjects. These include the archaeology of cinema, the examination of image provenance, psychoanalysis, and the study of gender economies. The book also features essays by Tom McDonough and Sven Beckstette, as well as a conversation between Siegel and Ulrike Groos, the director of Kunstmuseum Stuttgart.

Through her artistic practice, Amie Siegel challenges conventional notions of originality and authorship, exploring the boundaries between reproduction, transformation, and the creation of new meaning. Her exhibitions and catalogues serve as platforms for engaging with these complex themes and fostering a deeper understanding of the visual language she employs.
