In 1878, a remarkable incident unfolded in southern Africa, where two prominent figures, General Lord Chelmsford, the esteemed army commander, and Sir Henry Bartle-Frere, the High Commissioner, took a bold step that would have far-reaching consequences. Driven by an overconfidence that bordered on audacity, Frere and Chelmsford made a false threat of a Zulu invasion of British Natal. Without seeking any government permission, they embarked on an audacious invasion of Zululand, deploying five independent columns of troops. What makes this act even more astonishing is that both leaders had just experienced two failed expeditions against the neighboring Zulus, led by King Sekhukhune and his Pedi people. Their disregard for the consequences of their previous failures was a testament to their audacity and disregard for the established norms of governance.

The Zulu war, which ensued, lasted only six months but was marked by two separate British invasions of Zululand. The first invasion, in January 1879, proved catastrophic, resulting in the loss of thousands of British lives. However, the second invasion, in July 1879, was a resounding success, led by the legendary British general, Lord Chelmsford. This second invasion proved to be a turning point in the war, and it ultimately led to the defeat of the Zulus.

This book, written by a historian with extensive experience as a Zulu War battlefield guide, offers a comprehensive overview of the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879. It is filled with descriptive text that brings the events of that time to life, accompanied by stunning location photographs that provide a visual perspective. Additionally, the book includes illuminating map overviews of the twelve main battles, including Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift. These maps, meticulously created by the author based on his own lecture notes and "battlefield map handouts," have been cherished by his many groups and other guides for over 25 years. They serve as invaluable tools for understanding the layout and sequence of events during these fierce and bloody engagements.

At the suggestion of the Anglo-Zulu War Historical Society, these maps are now reproduced in book form, making them accessible to a wider audience. While numerous volumes have been written on the subject, this work offers a deeper insight into these gruelling and complex battles. It sheds light on the strategies employed by both sides, the bravery of the soldiers, and the political and social implications of the war.

In conclusion, this book is a must-read for anyone interested in the Anglo-Zulu war, history, or military strategy. It provides a comprehensive and engaging account of one of the most significant conflicts in southern African history, offering a valuable perspective on the events that shaped the region.
