In this captivating biography of the Indian revolutionary M. P. T. Acharya (1887–1954), Ole Birk Laursen unveils the remarkable transnational networks, movements, and activities of India's most influential anticolonial anarchist in the twentieth century. Driven by an insatiable desire for complete freedom from colonialism, authoritarianism, fascism, and militarism, which are deeply entrenched in the nation-state ideology and politics, Acharya tirelessly fought for an international vision of socialism and freedom. During the tumultuous early decades of the 1900s—characterized by the globalization of radical inter-revolutionary struggles, world wars, the rise of communism and fascism, and the expansion of colonial independence movements—Acharya forged alliances with pacifists, anarchists, radical socialists, and anticolonial fighters in exile, advocating for a future free from any form of oppression, be it from colonial rulers or native masters.

Drawing upon a vast array of archival material, private correspondence, and other primary sources, Laursen meticulously demonstrates that, among his contemporaries, Acharya's turn to anarchism was truly unique and pioneering in the struggle for Indian independence. Anarchy or Chaos is the first comprehensive study of M. P. T. Acharya, offering a fresh perspective on the global and interconnected history of anarchism and anticolonialism in the first half of the twentieth century.

Born in 1887 in a small village in the state of Karnataka, Acharya was a brilliant student who excelled in mathematics and science. However, his political consciousness was awakened during his college years when he became involved in the Indian independence movement. He was deeply influenced by the ideas of Mahatma Gandhi and the Swadeshi movement, which advocated for self-reliance and the boycott of British goods.

In 1906, Acharya joined the Indian National Congress (INC), a political party that was committed to achieving Indian independence through peaceful means. However, he soon became disillusioned with the INC's moderate approach and its willingness to compromise with the British colonial authorities. In 1910, Acharya left the INC and joined the Indian Independence League (IIL), a more radical organization that was committed to armed resistance against the British.

Under the leadership of Subhash Chandra Bose, the IIL launched a series of armed rebellions against the British in India. Acharya played a key role in these rebellions, and his bravery and dedication to the cause earned him the admiration of his fellow fighters. However, the IIL's armed tactics and its willingness to resort to violence alienated many Indians, including Acharya's own family.

In 1921, Acharya was arrested and sentenced to life imprisonment for his involvement in the IIL's armed rebellions. He spent the next 20 years in prison, where he continued to advocate for Indian independence and the abolition of colonialism. During his imprisonment, Acharya wrote several books and articles, including his famous essay "Anarchy or Chaos," which argued that the only way to achieve true freedom and social justice was through the destruction of the nation-state and the establishment of a decentralized, anarchist society.

After his release from prison in 1941, Acharya continued to work for Indian independence and the establishment of an anarchist society. He founded several organizations, including the Anarchist Communist Federation of India (ACFI) and the Anarchist Federation of India (AFI), which aimed to promote anarchist ideas and principles in India. Acharya also traveled extensively, lecturing and advocating for anarchism and anticolonialism in various parts of the world.

In 1954, Acharya died at the age of 67, but his legacy continues to inspire and influence activists and thinkers around the world. His commitment to freedom, social justice, and the abolition of oppressive systems remains a powerful testament to the enduring power of his ideas.

In conclusion, M. P. T. Acharya was a remarkable Indian revolutionary who dedicated his life to the struggle for Indian independence and the establishment of an anarchist society. His transnational networks, movements, and activities were a testament to his unwavering commitment to freedom and social justice. Through his writings, speeches, and actions, Acharya inspired generations of activists and thinkers to continue the fight for a better world, free from the shackles of colonialism, authoritarianism, and fascism. Anarchy or Chaos is a valuable contribution to the study of anarchism and anticolonialism in the first half of the twentieth century, and it offers a fresh perspective on the global and interconnected history of these movements.
