Angel in the Forest is Marguerite Young's captivating account of two utopian community attempts in nineteenth-century America. In this captivating narrative, Young recounts the intriguing story of New Harmony, Indiana, a community established in 1814 by the German mystic Father George Rapp, who aimed to apply Scriptural communism to everyday life in pursuit of the New Jerusalem. However, in 1825, the community was sold to Robert Owen, the father of British socialism, who, along with a group of English immigrants, implemented his own rationalistic theories for a perfect community. Both experiments ultimately failed, but Young discovers a distinctively American yearning for utopia in both endeavors, which continues to shape the American spirit to this day. A tradition of faith and folly can be traced from Owen's New Moral World to George Bush's New World Order. Angel in the Forest, originally published in 1945, received widespread acclaim upon its release. This edition includes a thoughtful introduction by Mark Van Doren, which was included in Scribner's 1966 reprint.
