Rembrandt Bugatti was the brother of Ettore Bugatti and a sculptor who created beautiful bronzes of wild animals. He lived a strange and orderly life, but his life was ruined by the declaration of war in 1914, when the zoos in Paris and Antwerp were closed and the captive creatures were shot. Bugatti killed himself in a military hospital, unable to live in a world that allowed such horrors to be visited on man and beast.

Rembrandt Bugatti, the brother of renowned luxury sports car builder Ettore, was a remarkable artist known for his stunning bronzes of wild animals. Spending countless days and weeks observing them in the Paris and Antwerp Zoos, he captured their beauty and essence in his sculptures. Bugatti even took some of these animals to live in his Paris apartment, allowing them to inspire his work.

Edgardo Franzosini's captivating short novel delves into the eccentric and orderly life of this extraordinary genius. A gentle man with a deep love for animals, Bugatti created some of the most memorable sculptures of his time. However, his short life was tragically cut short by the outbreak of World War I in August 1914. As the Germans advanced towards Paris and Antwerp, the zoos in both cities were closed, and in a state of fear and panic, the decision was made to shoot the captive creatures. Firing squads of soldiers massacred the wild cats, elephants, and eagles, leaving Bugatti devastated and unable to cope with the world that allowed such horrors to occur.

In the midst of this tragedy, Bugatti, who was working in a military hospital, took his own life, unable to bear the weight of the knowledge that he had witnessed such unimaginable cruelty. His legacy as an artist and a compassionate human being continues to inspire and captivate people worldwide.
