  • More about Anthrozoology: Human-Animal Interactions in Domesticated and Wild Animals

Anthrozoology, the study of human-animal interactions (HAIs), has grown significantly in the past 20 years, with two principal points of focus: the emotional and health benefits of human-animal attachments and the impact of these interactions on animal welfare. This topical area of study is of growing importance for animals in animal management, animal handling, animal welfare, and applied ethology courses, as well as for people in psychology, anthropology, and human geography.

Anthrozoology, the study of human-animal interactions (HAIs), has witnessed significant expansion over the past two decades, making it an opportune moment to consolidate our knowledge derived from empirical evidence regarding our relationships with domesticated and wild animals. Two primary focal areas have emerged in this research. Firstly, it has become evident that the strength of these attachments not only brings emotional benefits to individuals but also confers health advantages, leading to the development of a field focused on utilizing companion animals for therapeutic purposes. Secondly, the recognition has grown that our interactions with animals have implications for their welfare, ultimately influencing their quality of life. Consequently, we now investigate HAIs across various scenarios where animals come into contact with humans, including but not limited to pets/companions, farm livestock, laboratory animals, animals in zoos, and in the wild. This interdisciplinary field of study holds increasing significance for animals in animal management, animal handling, animal welfare, and applied ethology courses, as well as for individuals pursuing psychology, anthropology, and human geography at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It is of interest to students, researchers, and animal managers across the broad spectrum of human-animal contact.
