In this edited book sponsored by the ATE Diversity Committee, we invited teacher educators to engage in a critical dialogue and reflection around theories, issues, complexities, and challenges of antiracist teacher education and to exchange critical ideas and theory/research-informed practices for preparing antiracist teachers. The audience for this book includes teacher educators from all disciplinary areas and at all levels. It is also intended for administrators and policy makers leading teacher education programs at national or state levels. Given the recent racial injustice and tension witnessed and experienced across the country, achieving racial justice has become a top priority in schools, workplaces, and communities nationwide. There is an urgent need for teacher educators to support this cause. This book is a direct response to this call and is highly timely and much needed.
The book aims to foster a deeper understanding of antiracist teacher education and its significance in addressing systemic racism and promoting equity in education. It provides a platform for teacher educators to share their insights, experiences, and best practices, as well as to engage in meaningful discussions and debates about the most effective strategies for preparing antiracist teachers.
One of the key themes explored in the book is the importance of cultural competency and antiracist pedagogy in teacher education. Teacher educators are encouraged to develop a comprehensive understanding of the diverse cultures and backgrounds of their students, and to use this knowledge to create inclusive and equitable learning environments. They are also challenged to examine their own biases and assumptions and to work towards dismantling them, in order to promote antiracist teaching practices.
Another important aspect of the book is the role of teacher educators in advocating for policy changes that support antiracist teacher education. They are encouraged to engage with policymakers and educators at all levels to promote the adoption of policies that prioritize racial justice, equity, and inclusion in education. This may include advocating for increased funding for teacher education programs that focus on antiracist teaching, as well as promoting the integration of antiracist education into the curriculum and professional development of teachers.
The book also highlights the importance of collaboration and partnerships in achieving antiracist teacher education. Teacher educators are encouraged to work with other educators, researchers, and community organizations to develop and implement effective antiracist education programs. This may include partnering with local schools and communities to provide teacher training and support, as well as collaborating with universities to conduct research and develop new theories and practices in antiracist teacher education.
In conclusion, this edited book is a valuable resource for teacher educators and administrators who are committed to promoting antiracist teacher education and achieving racial justice in education. It provides a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to antiracist teacher education, and offers a wealth of insights, experiences, and best practices for preparing antiracist teachers. By engaging in critical dialogue and reflection, and by exchanging critical ideas and theory/research-informed practices, teacher educators can play a vital role in creating a more just and equitable education system for all students.
