This book presents a collection of contributions presented at the Applied Mathematics for Environmental Problems minisymposium during the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM) held in Valencia, Spain, from July 15 to 19, 2019. The first paper explores a simplified physical wildfire spread model, developed by employing partial differential equations solved using finite element methods and integrated into a Geographic Information System (GIS). This model serves as a valuable and efficient tool for simulating and analyzing wildfire behavior.
The second paper delves into one of the factors contributing to the unpredictable nature of wildfires, specifically fire spotting, through a statistical approach. The third paper focuses on low-level wind shear, which poses a significant hazard during aircraft takeoff and landing. It presents an experimental wind shear alert system that relies on predicting wind velocities derived from the Harmonie-Arome model.
The final paper addresses the environmental impact of oil reservoirs. It employs a high-order hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin formulation coupled with high-order diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta schemes to solve one-phase and two-phase flow problems through porous media. These contributions showcase the effectiveness of mathematics and numerical modeling in addressing environmental problems.
Overall, this volume offers insightful examples of how mathematics and numerical modeling can be employed to address complex environmental challenges and contribute to the betterment of our planet.
