- More about Archaeological Perspectives on Hunter-Gatherer Landscapes and Resource Management in Interior North Norway
Stone Age research on the coast of north Norway has been influential on settlement studies, but knowledge of the inland has been weak, geographically skewed, and exhibiting major chronological gaps. The LARM project (2008-2013) aimed to generate new archaeological knowledge of the inland and integrate it with old, unpublished data. The book is framed conceptually by a general approach to hunter-gatherer landscape use and discusses the transition from hunting to reindeer herding among the indigenous Sami in the region. The archaeological and historical data range from about 7500 BC until the Early Modern period (AD 1500-1700).

Stone Age research on the coast of north Norway has had a significant impact on settlement studies in the broader region for over a century. Research on Stone Age and Sami coastal sites has contributed to major debates in Fennoscandian archaeology. However, our understanding of the inland has been limited, geographically skewed towards larger river valleys, and exhibiting significant chronological gaps, which were previously unknown. To address this, the LARM project (Landscape and Resource Management) was launched from 2008 to 2013 with the aim of generating new archaeological knowledge of the inland and integrating it with previously unpublished data from hydroelectric development projects conducted in the 1970s and 1980s. This book is the outcome of that endeavor. The book is conceptualized around a general approach to hunter-gatherer landscape use, which is also discussed in relation to the transition from hunting to reindeer herding among the indigenous Sami in the region under study. Sami landscape practices and knowledge provide an important baseline, with circumpolar perspectives incorporated. The archaeological and historical data explored in the book span from approximately 7500 BC to the Early Modern period (AD 1500-1700).
