The Arctic region is often perceived as an isolated and remote area, but the reality is quite different. The Arctic is deeply connected to the rest of the planet through a multitude of factors, including weather patterns, global ocean circulation, and large-scale migration patterns. The public's interest in the "changing Arctic" is growing, particularly in light of the rapid changes occurring in ecosystems and the exploitation of resources. The Arctic is a focal point of international environmental science, encompassing both scientific research and policy/environmental management perspectives.
This book aims to engage a broad audience in thinking about the Arctic by showcasing the vast scope of what it means to study its ecology. Arctic Ecology seeks to provide a comprehensive introduction to the diverse array of ecologies within the Arctic region. As the Arctic undergoes rapid changes, understanding the fundamental ecology that underpins this region is crucial in comprehending the consequences of these changes.
Arctic Ecology is specifically designed to serve as a valuable resource for graduate students in environmental science, ecology, and climate change. It addresses Arctic ecology in a focused manner, highlighting issues related to climate change and its ecological implications. The book will also be of interest to policy-makers, researchers, and international agencies working on ecological issues and the effects of global climate change in the Arctic.
