- More about Armies of the Great Northern War 1700-1720
The Great Northern War was a long series of campaigns in which Russia replaced Sweden as the predominant power in Northern Europe, reshaping the Northern European power balance up to the eve of the Napoleonic Wars. It began with Swedish victories but Peter the Great of Russia showed steadfast determination and Charles overreached himself when he invaded Russia in 1708. Sweden continued to fight, and frequently win, in Germany, Denmark and Norway, until Charles's death in battle in 1718, but the war itself did not conclude until 1721. Armies of the Great Northern War offers a vivid insight into the troops which battled for control of the North.

The Great Northern War was a protracted conflict that saw Russia, in alliance with various countries, engage in a series of campaigns against Sweden, ultimately replacing them as the dominant power in Northern Europe. While contemporaneous with the Duke of Marlborough's pivotal campaigns against France, the Great Northern War had a more significant impact, reshaping the Northern European power balance until the onset of the Napoleonic Wars. The war commenced with a remarkable series of Swedish victories led by King Charles XII, spanning from Denmark to Poland and deep into Germany. However, Peter the Great of Russia demonstrated unwavering determination, and Charles XII made a critical error when he invaded Russia in 1708. The Russians employed scorched earth tactics, ultimately defeating the Swedish army at Poltava in 1709, one of the most decisive victories in history. Despite this setback, Sweden continued to fight and win in Germany, Denmark, and Norway until Charles XII's death in battle in 1718. The war itself concluded in 1721. This study delves into the intricate details of the numerous armies and complex alliances involved in the war for Northern European dominance. Featuring accurate full-color artwork and extensive detail, Armies of the Great Northern War provides a captivating glimpse into the troops that fought for control of the North.
