The Ars Notoria, a mediaeval grimoire or magician's manual, gained widespread popularity during the 13th to 16th centuries but has since faded into obscurity. Despite its historical significance, it remains highly relevant in the 21st century due to its comprehensive techniques for rapidly absorbing and understanding complex subjects. Among the numerous grimoires attributed to the Solomonic tradition of magic, the Ars Notoria stands as one of the oldest and most enigmatic. This work was pseudepigraphically attributed to various renowned figures, including Solomon, who purportedly received it directly from God through the intermediary of the angel Pamphilius. It was also claimed to have been translated by the magician Apollonius of Tyana, known as Flores aurei or the Golden Flowers. Additionally, it was attributed to Euclid of Thebes.
Unique among Solomonic grimoires, the Ars Notoria focused solely on memory and the ability to comprehend and assimilate entire subjects rapidly. It promised almost instantaneous proficiency in any of the seven Liberal Arts, making it a valuable resource for students seeking knowledge swiftly. Despite its widespread popularity and enduring history, the Ars Notoria has never been printed in its complete form. Throughout its publication history, from its early Latin appearance in Agrippa's Opera Omnia to the first and sole English translation by Robert Turner in 1657, all published versions of this work have omitted the most crucial component of its operation: the notae.
The notae are a set of complex pictorial illustrations that form the heart of the Ars Notoria's system. These illustrations serve as a visual aid, helping practitioners to remember and comprehend the information presented in the grimoire. Without the notae, the Ars Notoria loses its essence and effectiveness, rendering it incomplete and incomplete.
Fortunately, the long-awaited complete edition of the Ars Notoria has finally been released. This comprehensive edition includes all the notae originally included in the original manuscript, providing practitioners with the complete and authentic version of this ancient grimoire. The release of this edition marks a significant milestone in the study of magic and occultism, as it allows scholars and enthusiasts to access the full range of knowledge and techniques contained within the Ars Notoria.
In conclusion, the Ars Notoria is a mediaeval grimoire that has gained historical significance due to its comprehensive techniques for rapid knowledge acquisition. Despite its obscurity in modern times, its relevance remains undiminished. The recent release of the complete edition of the Ars Notoria marks a significant milestone in the study of magic and occultism, providing practitioners with the authentic and complete version of this ancient grimoire.
