The Latvian National Museum of Art is comprised of five distinct structures, one of which is the Art Museum RIGA BOURSE. This museum houses a collection of foreign art that was gathered in Riga from the 18th to the early 20th century. The Kunstkammer collection, belonging to medical doctor Nikolaus von Himsel (1729-1764), is the first of these collections and was bequeathed to the city of Riga in the 18th century. The Art Museum RIGA BOURSE's collections span various art-historical periods, including Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece, as well as Western European art from the 1930s. The museum boasts the largest collections of Western European painting and graphic arts from the 16th to the early 20th century, as well as decorative applied arts from the 18th to the early 20th century and Asian art from the 16th to the 20th century.

Located in Riga, in the heart of the Old Town, the Art Museum RIGA BOURSE occupies the former building of the Riga bourse, which was constructed in the Venetian palazzo style between 1850 and 1855. This building is a symbol of abundance, thanks to its lavishly decorated facade and the materials used for its interior finishing. It is the largest structure designed by Baltic-German architect Harald Julius von Bosse (1812-1894) in Riga. From 2007 to 2011, the museum underwent extensive renovation and adaptation to meet the museum's needs. Since 2011, the Art Museum RIGA BOURSE has been open to the public in its new premises. In 2013, the museum was honored with a special commendation from the European Museum Forum for its rebranding initiative.
