For over fifty years, Buffalo has held a prominent position in literary circles, representing not just a city in the rust belt of western New York but an active hub for poetry and speculative poetics in America. The journey began in 1963 when Charles Olson arrived on the campus of the State University of New York at Buffalo, followed shortly by Robert Creeley. This academic institution became the nurturing ground for transgressive literary thought and expansive poetries and fictions.

A collection of memorial pieces and interviews titled "Buffalo: A History of Literary Transgression" intricately traces this development from the Olson years and Creeley's long tenure through the establishment of the Poetics Program in 1991, led by Creeley and Susan Howe. This program eventually gave rise to the Electronic Poetry Center and Charles Bernstein's Electronic Poetry List.

Today, under the guidance of Myung Mi Kim, the program continues to flourish as an integral part of the broader network of poetic activities thriving throughout the city. Within this rich tapestry of documentation and historical insights, the personal accounts by faculty and students offer a captivating glimpse into the challenging, sometimes bewildering, literary and intellectual milieu that shaped Buffalo into the vibrant and distinctive city it is today.
