  • More about Atheism and the Goddess: Cross-Cultural Approaches with a Focus on South Asia

This book explores the complex modes of interface between religion, atheism, and the Goddess in multicultural contexts, challenging the notion that the fight against God is also a fight against the Goddess. It seeks to renegotiate and reorient the fundamental issues involved in the discussions of and debates over atheism.

This book delves into the intricate interplay between religion, atheism, and the Goddess in diverse multicultural contexts. While atheism has frequently been perceived as an interrogation of and a confrontation against God, the gender dimension of this discourse has not received adequate attention. Does the battle against God also involve a struggle against the Goddess? Or is there a shared ideological thrust between the atheistic rejection of the "Father" in God and the interrogation of the Divine Father in theology? Can the Goddess be perceived as a distinct entity from the domineering transcendental that atheists attribute to God the Father? Or is she simultaneously "transcendental" and "immanent," thus subject to the same atheist denial of transcendence as God in non-theistic or anti-theistic arguments? In undertaking this challenging project, Anway Mukhopadhyay aims to epistemologically, ideologically, and politically renegotiate and reorient some of the core issues at the heart of discussions and debates surrounding atheism.
