- More about B-36 'Peacemaker' Units of the Cold War
The Convair B-36 was a Cold War-era, 10,000-mile bomber with six engines and heavy defensive armament. It participated in many important nuclear test programs and provided the US nuclear deterrent until the B-52 was available in 1955. It was one of the first aircraft to use substantial amounts of magnesium in its structure, earning it the nickname "Magnesium Overcast." The aircraft was so large and complex that it had a wingspan longer than the Wright brothers' first flight, equivalent engine power to 400 cars, the same internal capacity as three five-room houses, and 27,000 gallons of internal fuel. Convair employees suggested names for the aircraft, but objections from religious groups deterred the USAF from ever adopting it officially. This fully illustrated volume includes first-hand accounts, original photographs, and up to 30 profile artworks depicting the complexity of this superlative aircraft.

The Convair B-36, a remarkable aircraft developed during the Cold War, holds a captivating place in history. Its conception in 1941, in response to the potential threat of Germany occupying Britain, aimed to create a long-range bomber capable of striking targets thousands of miles away. With its formidable defensive armament, six engines, and exceptional performance, the B-36 was designed to evade interception by fighters. However, rapid advancements in jet engine and high-speed airframe technology soon rendered it obsolete. Nevertheless, the B-36 played a significant role in numerous nuclear test programs and served as the United States' nuclear deterrent until the introduction of the faster B-52 in 1955.
One of the B-36's remarkable features was its extensive use of magnesium in its structure, earning it the nickname "Magnesium Overcast." This innovative material allowed for a larger and more complex aircraft, with a wingspan longer than the Wright brothers' first flight, equivalent engine power to 400 cars, and an internal capacity equivalent to three five-room houses and 27,000 gallons of fuel. The deep wing design also facilitated engine maintenance during flight, a feat that was highly praised by engineers.
The B-36's service in the bomber and reconnaissance roles continued until its retirement in February 1959, after 11 years in service with the Strategic Air Command (SAC). During its operational lifespan, the B-36 flew over 100,000 missions and participated in numerous significant events, including the Berlin Airlift and the Korean War.
Despite its technological advancements, the B-36 faced opposition from religious groups, which prevented the United States Air Force (USAF) from officially adopting it. This decision led to the creation of other iconic aircraft, such as the B-52, which eventually replaced the B-36 in SAC's arsenal.
This comprehensive volume, meticulously illustrated with first-hand accounts, original photographs, and up to 30 profile artworks, delves into the intricate details of the Convair B-36. It sheds light on the aircraft's development, operational history, and technological advancements, providing a deep understanding of its significance in the Cold War era. The B-36's legacy continues to inspire and intrigue aviation enthusiasts and historians alike, reminding us of the remarkable achievements and challenges faced during this pivotal period of history.
