The 50th Infantry and 7th Armoured divisions, along with the 4th Armoured Brigade, were brought back from the Mediterranean to spearhead the invasion of Normandy. They were heavily reinforced by individuals and fresh units, but faced difficulties on the beaches and lost opportunities. This allowed the 12th and 130th Hitlerjugend SS Panzer Divisions to arrive in Normandy, resulting in a fierce battle for the hedgerows of the Bocage country. The Desert Rats were forced to withdraw, having lost much of their reputation, and the fighting became increasingly attritional.

The Normandy campaign was a pivotal moment in World War II, marked by intense fighting on the beaches and in the hedgerows of the Bocage country. The campaign was spearheaded by veteran desert formations, including the 50th Infantry and 7th Armoured divisions, along with the 4th Armoured Brigade. These units were heavily reinforced by individuals and fresh units, and their task was to push south to Villers Bocage with armor on the evening of D Day in order to disrupt German counter-attacks on the beachhead.

However, the campaign was not without its difficulties. The 50th Division encountered difficulties on its beaches, which allowed time for the 12th Hitlerjugend SS Panzer Division and the equally elite 130th Panzer Lehr Division to arrive in Normandy. Despite delays of their own caused by allied fighter bombers, these German units managed to arrive in Normandy and take up positions in the Bocage country.

The result was a fierce battle for control of the Bocage country, with the 4th Armoured Brigade's thrust south encountering opposition from the start and being firmly blocked just south of Point 103 after an advance of less than 5 miles. A major counter-attack by Panzer Lehr failed, as did a renewed British attempt, this time by the vaunted 7th Armoured Division, which was halted at Tilly sur Seulles. From here, the fighting became a progressively attritional struggle in the hedgerows of the Bocage country south of Bayeux.

More and more units were drawn into the fighting, which steadily extended west. Finally, an opportunity to outflank the German defenses was taken, and the 7th Armoured Division reached Villers Bocage. Here, the County of London Yeomanry encountered the newly arrived Tigers of Michael Wittmann, with disastrous results. The Desert Rats were forced to withdraw, having lost much of their reputation.

The battalions of the 50th Division then faced their most unpleasant period of the war, in bitter fighting, at often very close quarters, for the next hedgerow. The fighting was intense, and the German defenses were well-prepared. The Desert Rats were able to hold their ground, however, and eventually managed to break through the German lines and push south towards Villers Bocage.

The campaign in Normandy was a testament to the bravery and skill of the British and American troops who fought there. It was a difficult and costly battle, but it ultimately helped to pave the way for the Allied victory in World War II. The Normandy campaign remains one of the most significant events in military history.
