The presented Wohnprojekte in Vienna emerged from a desire to develop living concepts that strengthen community bonds and contribute to a more cohesive society. These projects encompass a range of initiatives, including collaborative building groups, community gardens, temporary or permanent social housing solutions for marginalized groups such as homeless individuals and asylum seekers. While private apartments may be reduced in size when shared spaces are abundant, this reduction in square footage leads to a decrease in the demand for basic infrastructure and opens up opportunities for community-oriented activities and recreational areas. The guiding principles of the Baugruppe B.R.O.T. are encapsulated in their program name: "Begegnen, Reden, Offen sein, Teilen." These models of living and working seek to provide alternatives to the capitalist mindset. Users are actively involved in the planning process, even at the project's conception stage. In an introductory interview, Ulrike Schartner and Alexander Hagner from gaupenraup+/- provide insights into their work's origins and strategies. Robert Temel and Isabella Marboe explore the evolution of community-driven building and housing forms in two essays, drawing upon significant precedents and prevailing trends.
