Ludwig I., the founder of the New Pinakothek, not only amassed a collection of contemporary paintings from Angelika Kauffmann to Arnold Böcklin, but also acquired significant sculptures by renowned artists such as Antonio Canova and Bertel Thorvaldsen. Additionally, he acquired numerous busts by artists like Christian Daniel Rauch and Friedrich Tieck, originally intended for the Walhalla or Ruhmeshalle. Furthermore, the king commissioned portraits from artists like Johann Halbig, as well as painters, many of whom he had previously acquired paintings from. As a result, an extraordinary collection of portrait busts made of gypsum emerged, showcased as the Pantheon of contemporary artists in the New Pinakothek. These sculptures, from Ludwig I.'s collection, have undergone scientific analysis for the first time. The present volume, the first of a three-part catalog of all sculptures from the 19th century in the New Pinakothek, presents the works in color photographs and provides context on their creation.
