I was a "badass cop" who struggled to find success in a male-dominated world of policing, facing biases, layoffs, and becoming an undercover officer. I left law enforcement and returned to college, where education and research offered me enlightenment to the realities of policing and how institutional biases are perpetuating the same mistakes I made.

Throughout my career, I have been referred to as a "badass cop," but the reality is that this is not who I truly am. Beneath that façade, there has always been an insecure little girl who struggled to find her way in life. When I entered the field of law enforcement, I sought strength and self-confidence, but instead, I encountered new traumas that I was ill-equipped to handle.
Struggling to thrive in the demanding, male-dominated world of policing, I faced numerous biases, repeated layoffs, and even had to resort to working as a prostitute, drug addict, and thief. It was a difficult and challenging journey, but I refused to give up.
After leaving law enforcement, I returned to college, where education and research provided me with a newfound understanding of the realities of policing that I had been too immersed in the subculture to perceive. It was a painful process, as I had to confront the many mistakes and misconceptions I had made while serving as a police officer. Only now do I fully comprehend how institutional biases continue to perpetuate many of the same errors that I committed during my time in the force.
Through my experiences, I have learned that being a police officer is not just about enforcing the law; it is about serving the community and upholding the values of justice and equality. It is about recognizing the biases and prejudices that exist within the system and working tirelessly to overcome them. It is about being open to learning and growing as a person and as an officer.
As I reflect on my journey, I am proud of the progress I have made, but I also know that there is still much work to be done. I am committed to continuing to advocate for change within the law enforcement community and to working towards a more just and equitable society for all.
